Bad Sniffles

I've been suffering from a terrible chest cold since last Thursday. It was a gift left behind by my cousin Sheila before she returned to Washington.
I'm keeping my head above water by taking the Western Family version of Mucinex, cough syrup, cough drops and frequent applications of vapor rub on my chest. It's been years since I've had a "proper" cold, but this one is a real whammy. I've been sleeping a lot, and drinking tons of hot tea or ice-cold 7-Up. My rib cage hurts from all the coughing, and my head feels like a grapefruit stuck on a toothpick.
The day before the virus settled in my chest, I prepared a large pot of homemade vegetable-pasta-chicken soup. I've basically been living on it as nothing else sounds appetizing at the moment.
I did see Mum briefly on Friday morning, when I took her a container of the homemade soup. Her room is now decorated with flowers from Dad's funeral. On prominent display is also a framed photo of her and my father on their wedding day in 1959.
She now seems calm and accepting, the ride down Parley's Canyon last Tuesday apparently erased from her memory. She's made no mention of it, and I certainly don't intend to talk about it in front of her.
In truth, it is better left forgotten.
